Mittelbau-Dora,
the production site of V1 and V2 rockets, was a concentration camp which
was linked with the civilian world in a distinctive way. Civilians worked
with prisoners in the camp and in its branches; the death camp of the concentration
camp was located in the city of Nordhausen. The dominant idea of the redesigning
project is to make this intertwining clear in two ways:
A) For one, the course of the former train tracks will be marked with slightly
lower gravel surfaces over a large area. This will also be done outside
of the competition area in the exterior camps. This simple measure will
clarify the entire system of the former "MittelwerkeÓ and its interlinking
with the surroundings, thus resolving the problematic limitation of content
to the camp Mittelbau-Dora. On the approach to Dora, the overlapping of
the bands of gravel with the camp street at the entrance to the former concentration
camp forms a clearly perceptible threshold, even for drivers.
B) The learning and documentation center which is to be built is conceived
as a perception apparatus which formulates a connection of views between
the prisoner camp Mittelbau-Dora, the mine entrances, and the city of Nordhausen.
Both measures tie the memorial, whose location is remote at the present
time, back into its surroundings and clarifies important connections of
contemporary history.
